OCC weathers a storm

Orange Coast College continues to navigate the rough waters of the

state’s budget crisis with the nimbleness of an old mariner.

The school’s latest success came with the annual School of Sailing

and Seamanship’s boat auction and marine gear sale. The event raised

$63,587, enough to return 21 course sections to the schedule. The

college had had to cut them because of the weak state budget.

It was such a success that the state has even lauded the idea. And

we’re more than happy to jump aboard with our own applause and point

out who the real winners are: the students who will now get to take

those classes.

There remain, of course, stormy seas ahead, with course cutbacks

still between 500 and 1,000 classes. But little by little, some calm

is coming to OCC.
