Irrelevant fun kicks off on Monday

Irrelevant Week XXVIII kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Monday with the arrival

party to honor Ryan Hoag, NFL draft pick No. 262, at Newport Dunes

Resort. The festivities are sponsored by the Commodores Club of the

Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce.

The 23-year-old Hoag, who stands 6-foot-2 and weights 200 pounds,

is a product of Gustavius Adolphus College in Minnesota and was

drafted as a wide receiver by the Oakland Raiders. Hoag is in for one

fun week before he begins the Oakland Raiders’ training camp.

The admission price to the arrival party is $10 per person and

includes live entertainment and great food from Fireman’s Chili, Lido

Diner, Ho Sum Bistro, Tommy Bahama Tropical Cafe and Emporium,

Newport Rib Co., Picanta Martin’s, Blue Water Grill, The Bungalow,

Memphis Cafe, Clayton Shurley’s Real BBQ, Thaifoon Restaurant, Hyatt

Newporter and the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel.

You will have a chance to mingle with sports celebrities and more

than 350 expected guests before Hoag is introduced and honored with

the “shower of gifts” from the local businesses and NFL teams.

On Thursday, you will have a chance to celebrate Carson Palmer,

Heisman Trophy winner, who will share the spotlight with Hoag,

Lowsman Trophy winner, at the Orange County Youth Sports Foundation

Sports Banquet at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel.

Palmer, the celebrated quarterback out of USC and the No. 1

selection of the draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, will be toasted,

along with the last choice, Mr. Irrelevant XXVIII, Hoag.

Individual tickets for the dinner, which begins with cocktails at

6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m., are $150. Tables of 10 are $1,500, and

corporate tables are $2,500, which includes preferred seating, as

well as one seat at a private VIP luncheon at the Ritz Restaurant

with USC head football coach Pete Carroll, and access to the

pre-event Celebrity Lounge.

All proceeds are for the benefit of local Orange County youth and

youth sports programs. No autographs, please.

DRIVERS NEEDED

Mobile Meals, sponsored by Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian and

FISH Harbor Area, is in need of volunteer drivers to deliver meals to

shut-ins in Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach and Newport

Beach, said the Rev. Bob Parry, board member of FISH.

“We ask people to take a two-hour shift once or twice a month to

pick up meals from Hoag Hospital and deliver them to an assigned

route,” Parry said. “During the summer months of June through

September, many of our regular volunteer drivers take off on

vacation, and we have a shortage of drivers now.”

Each day, volunteers deliver meals to 105 people in the four

communities and spend a few minutes visiting with them, in probably

the shut-ins’ only contact with the outside world. This is a

volunteer job for a retired person, a high school or college student

not attending summer school, and even for a business that would

encourage their employee’s participation. For more information or to

volunteer, call the FISH office at (949) 645-8050.

AN EVENING OF

MUSIC AND SONG

Harbor Christian Church and St. Michael & All Angels Church invite

you to An Evening of Music and Song (and dancing to oldies but

Diana D’ltri to share their musical talents in a concert to benefit

the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center and Loves & Fishes

Scholarship for low-income college bound students. The concert will

be held at St. Michaels & All Angels Church, 3233 Pacific View Drive,

Corona del Mar. The suggested donation is $15, $10 for seniors and
