TUESDAY
* Anita Street Beach: A resident said his red Victoria skimboard
was stolen from the ice plant he’d stored it in while surfing off the
1000 block at around 6 p.m. The victim said the skimboard is worth
$310.
* Bluff Drive: Police reported to the 31000 block after receiving
a call that a resident’s fireplace was still smoking after having put
it out at 9:26 p.m. Police and firefighters deemed there was no
danger.
* Cliff Drive: A resident in the 1200 block reported at 6:49 p.m.
that 10 to 12 kids in two or three cars were playing loud rap music
by his home. He said they didn’t appear to belong there. The cars
were gone when police arrived at 7:01 p.m.
* South Coast Highway: A resident in the 30000 block reported that
a man had just called her saying she had won the Canadian lottery and
needed to send him a check for $2,450. She told police she only
wanted the call documented for now, and didn’t want to press charges.
MONDAY
* Forest Avenue: A Downtown business owner reported to police at
4:10 p.m. that he’d been getting unwanted mail because of unhappy
customers.
* Park Avenue: Police filed a juvenile report after a student at
Thurston Middle School was caught with marijuana and a pipe at 1:08
p.m. An officer arrived at Thurston and waited with the student until
his parents arrived.
SUNDAY
* Club Drive: A resident called police saying he suspected six
males playing tennis were drunk on the court and thought they might
be drinking at 11:13 p.m. The caller was apparently unhappy that they
were playing 13 minutes after the courts were supposed to close.
* Mountain View Drive: A resident in the 3000 block said his red
Jaguar had been egged for the fourth time, and this time he wanted a
malicious mischief report filed.
* Calliope Street: Police arrested a Laguna Beach resident on
suspicion of drunken driving and hit-and-run after he allegedly hit a
van on Bluebird Canyon Drive, then a tree and a mailbox at the corner
of Calliope and Carolina streets with his 1993 Isuzu at 3:38 a.m.
* Catalina Street: The mother of a 14-year-old called police and
wanted her son charged with possession of marijuana after she said he
brought it into her house at 10:59 p.m. Police took him into the
station at 11:15 p.m., and his parents picked him up 10 minutes
later.
SATURDAY
* North Coast Highway, Broadway, Glenneyre Street, Ocean Avenue,
Regatta Road, Cliff Drive:
Residents on five streets reported swarms of bees in the area,
with one call on Cliff Drive of a bee sting. The concentration of
bees on Ocean Avenue was so great that pedestrians weren’t allowed to
walk on a section of the 200 block until beekeepers handled the
swarm. The police department recommends residents call a beekeeper,
not the police, in case of a swarm or hive sighting.
JUNE 13
* South Coast Highway: All police units responded to a call of an
overturned vehicle in the 600 block at 8:12 p.m. A woman driving a
1994 Ford Ranger, turning left onto Legion Street on a yellow light,
was reportedly broadsided by a BMW also apparently trying to beat the
light while heading north. The driver of the Ford was taken to South
Coast Medical Center, but sustained no significant injuries.
Northbound traffic was reduced to one lane until both cars were
towed. Police weren’t able to determine who was at fault in the
accident.
* Cozumel Court: Police received a call of verbal threats in an
apartment building in the 200 block at 8:41 p.m. The caller said her
upstairs neighbor was yelling continuously, so her male friend went
upstairs and asked him to “chill out.” The neighbor then reportedly
told him that he had a baseball bat and to never come to his door
again. All units were tied up with the overturned vehicle on South
Coast Highway, so they had to delay slightly in sending someone out.
All parties were contacted at 9:14 p.m. and everything was worked out
without arrests.
* The POLICE LOG is compiled and written by Mike Swanson from oral
and written reports from the Laguna Beach Police Department and other
sources. Not all police activity is included. Arrests indicate
suspicion of violations, not charges filed nor the results of court
action unless noted.
