CenterLine engineering in OCTA’s budget

Of the $787.4 million approved for the Orange County

Transportation Authority’s 2003-04 fiscal year, $9.6 million was

allocated for the engineering of the CenterLine light rail project.

Deferred from the budget was a bus rapid transit route along

Harbor Boulevard. It will be considered in another budget cycle at a

date to be determined.

OCC offers summer seamanship courses

OCC’s School of Sailing and Seamanship is offering an intermediate

Lido 14 class. The course, which will review basic skills and focus

on refining helm and sail trim work, should be taken after the

completion of the introductory course.

Participants may chose between Saturday or Sunday classes

beginning July 19 and 20, both taking place from 1:45 to 5:30 p.m.

This class is a primer for the introduction to Shields classes. The

cost is $115.

The introduction to Shields class, offered from July 28 to Aug. 1,

is a transition course between small boats and keel boats 27 to 30

feet. Topics will include skippering, sailing theory, docking,

reefing, knots, right-of-way rules, tacking and jibing, and safe

handling of a larger boat. This is also a noncredit course. The cost

is $120.

An outboard maintenance workshop will take place on July 19 from 1

to 4 p.m. Seminar leader Mike Clark, a factory-trained repairman,

will address common problems and making repairs while under way.

Topics such as “Maximizing Outboard Life,” “The importance of Correct

Fuel Mixtures” and “Making the Right Decisions About Purchasing a New

Outboard” will be discussed. The cost is $30 per person or $55 per

South Coast Plaza holding hotel exhibit

South Coast Plaza is presenting “Riviera Of The Pacific,” an

exhibit showcasing four luxury resorts on the Orange Coast, in its

Jewel Court.

The event, which continues through June 29, offers a look at the

Balboa Bay Club and Resort, the Montage Resort and Spa in Laguna

Beach, the St. Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point and the Ritz-Carlton

in Laguna Niguel.

The event will culminate in a drawing for stays in the four

hotels.

Mission furniture education event

Furnishings Direct is hosting a mission furniture education event

from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 28.

The event aims to educate consumers about quality furniture and

what to look for when buying it. The event will feature a Morris

Chair building demonstration and a drawing to win it. Furnishings

Direct, which opened five years ago, is at 1959 Harbor Blvd., Costa

Concert will benefit college-bound students

Rich Sherman and Friends are holding a gala concert to benefit the

Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center Loaves & Fishes

Scholarship for low-income college-bound students at 8 p.m. Saturday.

St. Michael & All Angels Church is sponsoring and providing a venue

for the event.

Sherman, resident artist at the Village Inn for 25 years, also

composes for the video and film industry. Artists Dreem, Michael

Phillips, Samantha Smith, Tina Wilson and Diana D’Itri will also be

present. The suggested donation is $15 for adults and $10 for seniors

and children. Hors d’oeuvres, refreshments and child care will be

Orange County Fair seeks rock memorabilia

The 2003 Orange County Fair is presenting the “Orange Groove,” a

new exhibit featuring Orange County’s contributions to rock music

from pre-surf to post-punk.

The fair is looking for artifacts such as photos, posters and old

instruments that relate to Orange County artists, venues and

instrument makers. Information and artifacts related to lesser-known

bands are also welcome.
