Three locals top all-Sunset boys’ volleyball
Kenny Markwardt and Eric Eastman of Huntington Beach High and
Marina High’s Steve Klosterman earned top honors on the 2003
all-Sunset League boys’ volleyball team.
The selections, made by the league’s six coaches, were announced
recently.
Markwardt and Eastman, outside hitters who helped lead Huntington
Beach to the 2003 title and a semifinal appearance in the
CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs, shared the Most Valuable
Player award.
Klosterman was the Player of the Year selection.
The First Team was comprised of eight players and the Second Team
is made up of nine players. On the First Team, Huntington Beach
senior setter Brock Boyce and Edison senior outside hitter Brett Reid
both were named to the squad.
Also making the First Team list were Fountain Valley seniors Tyler
Hagstrom and Jack Hauch, seniors Mark Lovein, Jayson Jablonsky and
Tyler Rex of Esperanza and Los Alamitos senior Paul Lotman.
On the Second Team, three local players were chosen -- Ryan
Ratelle, a sophomore middle blocker from Marina, Edison senior middle
blocker Adam Barsner and senior outside hitter Ben Buckalew of
Huntington Beach.
The rest of the team consisted of senior Norm Hutton and junior
Michael Jordan of Fountain Valley, seniors Taun Bui and Brandon
Weiner of Esperanza and senior Alex Holford and junior Kevin Monsoor
of Los Alamitos.
Herrera brothers gain first-place finishes
Brothers Josh and Elijah Herrera earned first-place finishes at
the Huntington Beach and Orange County track meets.
Josh Herrera, 14, a student at Sowers Middle School, placed first
in the boys’ 1988 Division 100- and 200-meter dashes at both the
Huntington Beach Track Meet and the Orange County Track Meet, both
efforts qualifying him for the Southern California Municipal Athletic
Federation meet.
At the Southern California meet held at Gahr High in Cerritos,
Josh took first-place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.9 and
was second overall in the 100-meter dash with a 12.8 time.
He began both events without use of starting blocks or spikes.
Elijah Herrera, 8, an Oka Elementary School student, placed first
in two 1995 Division events at the Huntington Beach Track Meet. He
finished second in both events at the Orange County Track Meet and
also qualified for the Southern California championship meet where he
ran a 1:19 and finished third in the 400-meter and was fourth overall
in the 200-meter dash.
Gymnastics classes offered for children
The Tumble-N-Kids gymnastics program, open to youngsters ages 10
months to 12 years, beginning to advanced, will offer classes at
three Huntington Beach sites beginning Tuesday.
The classes, run over a six-week period, will be held at Edison
and Murdy community centers and the City Gym and Pool.
