A rich experience

June Casagrande

Newport Beach’s image as a haven for the wealthy overlooks much of

what the city has to offer for locals and visitors. In fact, many of

the best times to be had in Newport Beach are also the least

expensive.

Newport’s true appeal lies in its natural riches: One of the

world’s largest private pleasure harbors and a stunning ecological

wetlands reserve encircled by miles of ocean and sandy beaches.

The ideal Newport weekend includes a mix of the ultra-posh and

ultra-earthy experiences the city has to offer.

* 6 p.m. Friday: Start by getting the flavor of the Newport Beach

locals know and love. A romantic sunset gondola cruise can set the

tone for a perfect Newport weekend, especially if coupled with dinner

at the Cannery Restaurant or any of Newport’s classic nautical-themed

eateries.

* 9 a.m. Saturday: Enjoy a cup of coffee overlooking the water at

Harbor House Coffee at the ferry landing on the Balboa Peninsula.

Then jump on the ferry for a ride over to quaint Balboa Island for a

stroll along its waterfront and Marine Avenue.

* 1 p.m. Saturday: When the sun starts to blaze, get back to the

peninsula for the full beach experience: sit in the sand, swim in the

ocean, enjoy the attractions and shops in Balboa Village and the

Funzone. But don’t linger too long. You’ve got to get to the Back Bay

while there’s still plenty of daylight.

* 4 p.m. Saturday: There are a number of ways to enjoy the

ecological wonder of the Upper Newport Bay, including kayak rentals

and guided interpretive tours. But perhaps the best is to just get

out there and hike around. Start at Shellmaker Island off Back Bay

Drive and just follow nature wherever it leads you.

* 7 p.m. Saturday: For dinner, try the Arches restaurant on West

Coast Highway where the steak and prime rib are as famed as the

seafood dishes. Then head over to Fashion Island for some glamorous

nightlife at The View, the lounge on top of the Newport Beach

Marriott with live music, dancing and a near-panoramic view of the

city.

* 9 a.m. Sunday: Brunch at the Five Crowns is imperative. Then

stroll down to Corona del Mar to enjoy beautiful Big Corona State

Beach.

* Noon Sunday: Before sunburn sets in, head to Fashion Island for

some world-class shopping, topped off with the ultimate indulgence:

Swedish massage at the spa of the famed Four Seasons Hotel Newport

Beach.

* 4 p.m. Sunday: Top of that relaxation with one final foray into

the city’s seafood expertise at the Bluewater Grill.

At the end of the day you’ll see that, in Newport, the good life

is what you make of it.
