Four Sailors voted All-Sea View

Newport Harbor High senior Mike Toole and junior Jamie Diefenbach,

who helped the Sailors earn a share of the Sea View League boys

volleyball title, have been named first-team all-league by Sea View

coaches.

Seniors Nick Glassic and Nick Kelly represent the Sailors on the

second team.

Toole, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter, was the most consistent hitting

threat all season for Coach Dan Glenn, while Diefenbach, a 6-8 middle

blocker, returned from reconstructive knee surgery to add a strong

net presence for the Tars during the league campaign.

Diefenbach was a second-team honoree in 2002.

Glassic, a 6-3 outside hitter, was another frequent kill

contributor, while Kelly, a 5-10 senior, contributed primarily with

ball control.

The Sailors, who advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern

Section Division I playoffs, matched the 9-1 league record of

Woodbridge, from which senior Ryan Walthall and junior John Winder

are the league’s Co-Most Valuable Players.

Seniors Mike Moeller and R.J. Liljestrom represent Woodbridge on

the first team that also includes Shahir Masri and Adam Albonni from

Foothill, Nolan Hammon from Aliso Niguel and Stephen Jeltema from

Irvine.

Sage Hill trio earn all-league honors; Joyce is first team

* Sage Hill School junior Kevin Joyce, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter,

leads three Lightning players included in the boys volleyball

coaches’ All-Academy League selections.

Joyce is a repeat first-team pick, while juniors Macsun Frederick

and Julian Smith-Newman are second-team honorees.

Joyce was the leading hitter for Coach Merja Connolly-Freund,

while Smith-Newman, who shared the captain’s role with Joyce,

triggered the attack at setter.

Frederick helped the Lightning contend for a CIF Southern Section

playoff berth, though it wound up fourth and missed the postseason.

The Lightning tripled its league victories from the 2002 season,

going 6-8 against Academy foes.
