Estancia’s Kornegay Co-MVP
Estancia High junior Josh Kornegay, who helped lead the Eagles to
their first league title in 19 boys volleyball seasons, has been
named Golden West League Co-Most Valuable Player by the circuit’s
coaches.
Joining Kornegay on the first team are Estancia teammates Kris
Hartwell, Trevor Holmes and Scott Sankey, as well as Costa Mesa’s
Garrett Walthers.
Brad Larsen and Jess Hellmich represent Estancia on the second
team, while Danny Krikorian, Gabriel Gonzalez and Ryan Bagwell are
second-team honorees from Costa Mesa.
Kornegay, a 6-foot-4 opposite, helped Coach Tracey Heims’ Eagles
post an 11-1 league record, good for a share of the crown with Ocean
View. A dominant hitter, as well as a talented passer and server,
Kornegay’s all-around game propelled the Eagles to the CIF Southern
Section Division III semifinals. He shared MVP laurels with Ocean
View senior Justin Roth.
Hartwell, a 6-2 junior outside hitter, Holmes, a 5-10 sophomore
setter, and Sankey, a 6-5 junior middle blocker, add to a talented
nucleus that will all return next spring.
Walthers, a 6-2 sophomore middle blocker, developed into Mesa’s
leading weapon.
Larsen was a 6-1 junior outside hitter and Hellmich a 6-0 senior
middle blocker.
Krikorian was a 6-0 senior outside hitter, Bagwell a 6-0 freshman
opposite and Gonzalez a 6-3 sophomore middle blocker.
