‘Eaters’ Lavery honored
UC Irvine senior golfer Mike Lavery has been named to the 2003
Verizon Academic All-District VIII men’s at-large third team.
Lavery, a psychology and social behavior major, led the Anteaters
to their third straight Big West Conference championship this season
by winning the individual title with a 36-hole score of 6-under par
138 (70-68). He had four top-10 finishes this season and was UCI’s
top performer at the NCAA West Regional Championships with a
32nd-place finish of 221 over three rounds. He ended his senior
season with an average of 72.47 per round.
Lavery has earned first-team All-Big West Conference honors the
past two years. He was UCI’s male Big West Scholar-Athlete of the
Year in 2002-03 and he is a four-time conference scholar-athlete.
The at-large team encompasses the sports of fencing, golf,
gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis,
volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Nominees must be a starter or
important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and must have
maintained at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average.
