Special thanks to many volunteers

The fourth annual Daily Pilot Cup is now over, and by all measures a
resounding success. This year, 96 teams participated representing 24
public and private schools within Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. Total
number of children involved was estimated at 1,750.
As the tournament grows so do the costs and responsibilities and I
therefore encourage anyone and everyone to become more involved in
next year’s Cup. One anticipated change for Pilot Cup 2004 will be a
response to the increasing number of teams and children.
I plan to form two levels of competition within each division,
i.e. a Gold Level and a Silver Level. Hopefully, this will allow
smaller schools and second-division teams to be more competitive and
have more fun. However, it should be noted this change will increase
the cost of the tournament.
Since the tournament is supported by donations we will need
additional donors. Please contact me if any business or individual
would like to be a sponsor. Any amount of donation is appreciated. If
a reader is interested in serving on the tournament committee please
contact me at [email protected].
Finally, I would like give a public thank you to all who
volunteered their time for the Cup. A special thank you goes out to
Youth Services Association, the Daily Pilot, Veterans of Foreign Wars
and Marcial Gallardo and El Matador restaurant for their continued
financial support. A second thank you to the Daily Pilot for their
outstanding coverage of the tournament. Once again, the daily
photographs and articles gave the Cup that extra special feeling.
Also, special thank you to the following people who made an extra
effort this year, including: Mark Arblaster, Tony Anish, Mark Teal,
Tria Anish, Tom Cope, John Curtis, Larry Webb, Cindy Barnard, Steve
Baugh, Marcial Gallardo, Gail Hedrick, Mike Gordon, Vanessa Gordon,
Robbie Gordon, Gerardo Jimenez, Jim Percival, Mike Draganza, Jeff
Grant, the Costa Mesa High School Athletic Department, Richard Dunn,
Steve Virgen, Barry Faulkner, Bryce Alderton, Ken Sipes, Cesar
Olivares, Alfredo Navar, Marshall Topping and all school
representatives and coaches.
I know there are some who I have failed to list and I apologize
for not getting to know the many volunteers who gave their time to
the kids in our community.
Once again, many thanks,
Kirk McIntosh
