UCI’s Turpin in heptathlon
Junior Annmarie Turpin will be UC Irvine’s sole representative at the
NCAA Track & Field Championships next week. Turpin will compete in
the heptathlon at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex on the Sacramento
State campus June 13-14.
She recorded a qualifying total of 5,228 points in winning the Big
West Conference title at Cal State Northridge May 14-15. That mark ranks No. 4 in UCI history and is 20th among the 27 competitors who
qualified for the NCAA meet.
At the NCAA West Regional Championships Saturday at Stanford
University, UCI senior Darrell Tozier finished sixth in the 800
meters (1:51.33), after winning his preliminary heat in 1:49.72
Friday.
Also on Saturday, Turpin placed 10th in the high jump with a mark
of 5 feet, 7 1/4 inches and junior Jenny Liou finished 20th in the
3,000 steeplechase with a time of 10:55.98.
At the regional Friday, senior Santosh Swamidass was eighth in the
men’s high jump (6-9 3/4) to tie his career best.
In women’s competition Friday, sophomore Erin Curtis finished 16th
in the pole vault (12-6 1/4) and senior Jessica Stafford was 19th in
the javelin throw with a toss of 135-8.
Sophomore Scott Jarvis finished fourth in his 400 hurdles heat in
53.86, but did not qualify for the finals.
Sophomore Suzanne Purmort was fifth in her 400 hurdles heat
(1:03.78) and senior Wendy Chan was eighth in her 800 heat in
2:10.01. Neither advanced to the finals.
