Both Corona del Mar and Newport Beach boys under-10 select soccer
teams won recent games. CdM is on its way to the semifinals of the
South Orange County League following a 2-0 victory over South Irvine
in the division playoffs.
Nick Gooding scored both of CdM’s goals as Emery Molnar, Jack
Nowak and Brandon Hoover secured the midfield with strong
ball-handling skills.
Nick Rich and Michael Hassman created several scoring
opportunities at forward. Spencer Christoff and Andrew McCormack
anchored the defense.
Kevin Gordonier and Alex Turney each made several saves in goal to
preserve the shutout.
CdM defeated San Clemente, 2-1, in the quarterfinals, with Nowak
and Molnar scoring goals.
Newport came from behind against South Irvine to stake a 2-1
victory. Stevie Miller and Timmy Root each scored a goal in the
fourth period to secure the win.
Newport then beat Santa Margarita on Mother’s Day, 1-0, with John
Barton scoring early in the first period.
Connor Cooper, Misha Pakvasa, Christian Ochoa, Root and Miller all
aided the offense while Ivan Becerra, Drew Diller and Sean Regan
controlled the defense.
Taylor Wildman and goalkeeper Logan Newett prevented any Santa
Margarita attackers from scoring.
