Gauchos edge Anteaters
The No. 15-ranked UC Irvine women’s water polo team held a 3-0 lead
early in the second period, but No. 11 Santa Barbara rallied for a
dramatic 6-5 win in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action Sunday
at UCSB.
Erin Lezak, a product of Irvine High, scored the game-winning goal
for the Gauchos (14-9, 2-4 in the MPSF) with 18 seconds remaining to
drop the Anteaters to 14-15, 1-6.
Adelaide Perram scored for UCI to make it 3-0, but the hosts
scored twice to cut the deficit to one by halftime. UCI peppered
Gaucho goalie Kristen McGlennon in the first two quarters, when she
made nine of her 10 saves.
UCSB scored the first three goals of the third period, but Erica
Horman’s second goal of the day tied the score, 5-5, with 5:56 left
in the game. It was the seventh win in their last eight games for
