Mustangs dominate selections
Seniors Sharon Day and Devin Denman, who helped the Costa Mesa High
girls soccer team dominate the Golden West League in the Mustangs’
first season in the circuit, top a dozen locals recognized on the
coaches’ all-league selections.
Day, a senior midfielder, is the Offensive MVP, while Denman, a
senior sweeper, is the Defensive MVP.
Junior Stacy Krikorian, sophomores Nilani Duarte and Jenny Sparks,
as well as freshman Jasmin Day, represent Costa Mesa on the first
team, which also includes Estancia senior Ruth Chavero.
The second-team includes six local standouts, including Costa Mesa
standouts Kara Jenkins, Valerie Gomez and Rachel Ronquillo, as well
as Karleen Curran and Marina Abdul from Estancia.
Sharon Day, who led the Mustangs with 29 goals and 34 assists on
their way to a share of the CIF Southern Section Division III title,
was a dominant force for Coach Dan Jenkins’ squad. Day helped Mesa
outscore Golden West rivals, 78-2, en route to a 12-0-0 league
record. She shared MVP honors in the Pacific Coast League last season
and was also a first-team All-PCL performer as a sophomore.
Denman, like Day, a four-year varsity performer, anchored a
defense that posted 10 league shutouts. She was first-team All-PCL
last season after earning second-team recognition as a sophomore.
Duarte was a midfield catalyst, while Sparks finished with 27
goals. Jasmin Day added 24 goals for the Mustangs, while Krikorian
was a stalwart at fullback.
Duarte and Sparks were second-team honorees in the PCL last
season.
Jenkins and Gomez were defensive standouts, while Ronquillo
contributed most in the midfield for Costa Mesa.
The Mustang standouts helped Costa Mesa finish 22-1-3, by far the
best season in the program’s history.
The league title was also a first for the Mesa program.
Chavero played sweeper, while Curran, a senior, was a standout
midfielder. Abdul, a freshman, was an offensive catalyst for the
Eagles.
