Smith pitches shutout as UCI snaps streak
UC Irvine starting pitcher Brett Smith faced three batters above the
minimum in his complete-game shutout, leading the Anteaters to a 4-0
nonconference victory over Washington State Saturday at Anteater
Ballpark.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for UCI, setting up
today’s rubber game of the three-game series against the Cougars.
UCI’s Jon Horwitz led off with a single in the first and the fifth
inning with a triple, scoring on Mark Wagner’s double in the first
and on a grounder in the fifth. Horwitz, the Anteaters’ centerfielder
was 4 for 5 with a run scored and had an RBI in the eighth as UCI
added to their lead. Wagner, UCI’s catcher, was 2 for 4 with two
doubles and an RBI, scoring once.
Smith held Washington State to four hits, striking out 10 and
walking two for his first complete game of the season. He also
recorded a team-high sixth win (6-1).
For the Cougars, starting pitcher Bryce Chamberlin threw 7 1/3
innings, yielding all four UCI runs on eight hits while striking out
three to fall to 3-2 on the season.
The Anteaters improve to 11-18 overall as WSU falls to 7-19. The
two teams meet in the series finale today at noon at Anteater
Ballpark.
