Cantarella helps the Sailors snap 19-game frustration
Junior right-hander Joe Cantarella spun a two-hitter, facing the
minimum over the first six innings, and Jeff Sanchez delivered a
run-scoring single in the fifth inning to lift the Newport Harbor
High Sailors to a 1-0 victory over visiting Laguna Hills in Sea View
League baseball Friday.
The decision snapped a 19-game league losing streak for the
Sailors, who improved to 3-7, 1-2 in league.
“I told them this was a big one,” said second-year coach Joel
Desguin.
Cantarella struck out four and walked one in an errorless game on
both sides of the diamond.
Through the first six innings, the only Laguna Hills figure on the
base paths was David Filipiak, with a one-out single. But he was
erased when the next batter went down, 6-4-3.
A walk and base hit in the seventh probably gave Desguin some
stomach pangs, but Cantarella got the last batter on a pop-up.
Newport Harbor got the only run it needed in the fifth inning when
Ryan Heenan battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk and
advanced to second on Dave Erickson’s sacrifice bunt.
Sanchez followed with a single down the first-base line and Heenan
scored well ahead of the play at the plate.
R.J. Muller had Newport’s only other base hit, a one-out bunt
single in the fourth inning, and a free pass put two runners aboard
before Laguna Hills pitcher Kevin Barnum struck out the next two
batters.
Barnum allowed just two singles, as did Cantarella, and struck out
nine in a game which lasted just 75 minutes.
The Sailors return to Sea View League play Wednesday night at
Windrow Park with Ryan Torrey scheduled to start.
