Eagles break out with 11-7 victory
A two-out, seven-run outburst in the second inning proved the
difference Friday for the Estancia High baseball team in an 11-7
Golden West League win over host Saddleback.
Sophomore Ryan Gleason began the rally with a two-run double, but
the two-baggers were just beginning. Eric Scheafer, Greg Hughes and
Jeremy Hauser followed suit for the Eagles to build a 7-1 lead.
Brad Young belted a two-run home run in the second and was one of
four Eagles to collect two hits. Cullen Crom, Tyler Hoffman and
Gleason were the other three. Gleason led the Eagles with three RBIs
with Young, Hoffman, Crom each scoring two runs.
The Eagles (3-6, 1-1 in league) had to hold off scrappy Saddleback
(2-6, 0-2), but was helped on the defensive end by Hoffman -- playing
left field -- in the fourth inning. Hoffman threw out a runner trying
to tag up from third to end the Saddleback threat.
“That was a momentum boost,” said Estancia Coach Jon Green. “We
took it from [Saddleback] right there.”
Estancia also received a strong relief outing from Tony Ippolito,
making his first appearance on the mound this season. Ippolito
scattered two hits over 3 1/3 innings, allowing no runs.
“[Ippolito] was changing speeds, throwing strikes and moving the
ball around on hitters real well,” Green said. “I’m very proud of
him.”
