Music society announces festival

The Laguna Beach Chamber Music Festival is planned for April 6

through 13.

The event will be presented by Laguna Beach Live! In collaboration

with the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and Laguna Chamber

Music Society.

They are using money from the city’s Community Assistance Program

and from the lodging establishments of Laguna through the Business

Improvement District.

The festival is designed to involve as much of the city as

possible and is directed to people of all levels of music

sophistication.

The festival will begin during the First Sundays program of art

and music at the Laguna College of Art and Design. A free concert by

harpsichordist, Eric Kinsley will be presented at 3 p.m. by Laguna

Beach Live! and a reception, hosted by the College, will follow at

4:30 to allow visitors to meet the musicians who will be involved in

the festival.

The concept of the festival is to have an established musician

work with emerging artists to give visitors the opportunity to watch

them at work and then to hear them perform individually and together.

This year, Claude Frank, a pianist of international reputation and

teacher at both Curtis Institute of Music and Yale University, has

been selected as the mentor musician and the two ensembles are The

Calder Quartet from USC and Trio Movado from New York.

A number of free events are being offered throughout the city

including a music and art reception at Woody’s at the beach on April

9, a discussion and demonstration on performing chamber music at the

Laguna Art Museum on April 10, and opportunities to observe the

coaching sessions and open rehearsals during the week. A number of

classes will also be offered at the local schools.

The concerts will take place during the evening on April 11 and 12

at 3 p.m. on April 13 at the Artists’ Theatre. Tickets are $20 per

concert. A special package of all three concerts for $45 which

includes sitting in reserved sections, and $10 per concert for

full-time students.

Two special benefits are being held at Hotel Laguna. On April 8,

Claude Frank will give a performance on the life and love of Schumann

and Brahms. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served for a donation of

$50. On Friday night, a special gourmet dinner will be given at Claes

Restaurant for $75 to benefit the Festival. Details are available on

www.lagunabeachlive.org. Tickets are being sold at the Laguna

Playhouse, 497-2787 and the Philharmonic Society, 553-2422, and

online at www.philharmonicsociety.org.
