Swimmer lost off Huntington found

The body of an unidentified man that washed ashore near the Balboa

Pier early Monday morning was identified Tuesday as Roy Lee, 18, of

El Monte -- the swimmer who disappeared off Huntington Beach on March

14.

The exact cause of death is still unknown, pending further tests

by the coroner’s office. The body was first discovered by a fisherman

and then by a restaurant patron Monday morning.

Mark King, 26, of Valencia, was eating breakfast at Ruby’s Dinner

when he was alerted to the body at 8:44 a.m. by a fisherman. King

then contacted police, who contacted the Orange County Sheriff’s

Harbor Patrol.

In addition to the Harbor Patrol, Newport Beach police, fire,

lifeguards and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department responded.

King said a fisherman was the first to discover the body.

“I was eating breakfast before work with my parents and a

fisherman guy came in panicked and said something about a body, so I

ran out after him and looked out into the pier and it looked like a

guy in his late teens,” King said, adding that the person was wearing

trunks.

Huntington Beach garage fire contained

Fire consumed a garage on Deep Harbor Drive last week, but

firefighters kept the blaze from spreading.

A passerby noticed smoke coming from a residential garage and

called the Fire Department. Three engines staffed with 17

firefighters responded and put out the blaze, which had been started

by a clothes dryer and spread to other appliances and combustible

materials in the garage. No one was home at the time and no one was

injured. Preliminary results put the cost of damages at $5,000.

Anaheim woman in critical condition

An Anaheim woman suffered severe injuries Monday in a traffic

collision at Beach Boulevard and Atlanta Avenue.

Just before noon on Monday Jennifer Kalnus, 33, of Anaheim, who

was driving a red Ford mustang, was struck by a white 98 Ford pick-up

driven by 18-year-old Adam Quick. Kalnus suffered severe injuries and

is in critical condition at UCI Medical Center.

Quick sought no medical attention even though he complained of

pain. No fault has been attributed to the motorists.
