The Ocean View High baseball team “welcomed” visiting Costa Mesa to
the Golden West League with a hard-fought 4-2 victory Wednesday.
Mustang senior pitcher George Vargas pitched well, Coach Doug
Deats said, but was outdueled by Seahawk senior left-hander Grant
Theophilus, who scattered four hits and struck out nine over six
innings to improve to 2-0.
“Vargas pitched better than the last game he won,” Deats said.
Adam Beltran went 1 for 3 and scored both Mesa runs, while Nate
Hunter and Gary Gonzalez each had RBI singles for the visitors.
Senior Philip Hann homered and doubles for the winners, who also
received a homer from sophomore Robert Purpura. Purpura also picked
up the save.
Joey Jameson’s straight steal of home plated another Seahawk run.
Ocean View improved to 5-1, while Mesa fell to 4-3.
