Looking back, 5 years ago this week:

Newport Harbor High’s boys volleyball team defeats Huntington

Beach, 15-6, 15-8, 19-17, for the first time since 1992 in a

nonleague match. Outside hitters Matt Jameson and Scott Archbold each

accumulate 25 kills while senior middle blocker Rick Robinson chips

in seven with teammate Scott Dore tallying six blocks and seven

kills. Just a few days earlier, Corona del Mar High upsets the

Sailors in the Battle of the Bay, 15-9, 14-16, 15-11, to claim the Orange County Championships. Coming into the game Harbor is ranked

No. 1 in the county, while the Sea Kings are ranked No. 5. CdM’s

strong middle attack of Greg Coon and Dennis Alshuler outperforms

Newport’s balanced approach. Coon (tournament MVP) rolls to 23 kills

with Alshuler contributing 19. Setter Greg Burden, also an

all-tournament pick with Alshuler, tallies 11 kills with Greg

Stampley and Kevin Hansen each tallying seven. Mike Jackson (five

kills) helps keep Harbor at bay. Newport senior setter Travis Nelson

and Jameson gain all-tournament team recognition as Dore leads

Newport with 16 kills. Archbold follows with 15.

CdM’s boys swim team beats visiting Santa Margarita, 97-73, with

only two individual event winners. Senior Kawika Tarayao tops a long

list of standouts with an All-American consideration time of 54.85 in

the 100-yard backstroke, a season best. He also tops the field in the

200 individual medley (2:00.11) and leads the victorious 200

freestyle relay quartet. Jason Powers, Scott Kramer and Lance Emery

round out the 200 free relay for the Sea Kings.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week:

Corona del Mar High’s three doubles teams power their way through

Newport Harbor, and the Sea Kings win the Battle of the Bay, 13-5, in

Sea View League boys tennis action. CdM’s No. 1 doubles team of

Rodolfo Prieto and Paul Fruchbom sweep easily. Harbor’s Geoff Abrams

improves to 12-0 in league with wins of 6-4, 6-3, 6-1.

Carrie Appell doubles and has a runner-up finish as Estancia

High’s girls track and field team outscores Century, 81-40, in a

Pacific Coast League meet. Appell cruises to victories in the 400

meters (1:07.8) and the 1,600 (5:59.5) while placing second to

teammate Tracy Heims in the 800. Junior Brook Leyerly wins both

weight events and Liz Pelayo records a personal record of 12:04.2 in

the 3,200. Lauren Weaver wins the 300 intermediate hurdles by two

seconds in 50.7.

Costa Mesa High girls basketball coach Lisa McNamee quiets all

skeptics when she announces at a team banquet that she will return to

coach in the 1993-94 season. McNamee leads the Mustangs (29-5) to the

CIF Division III state title game -- the first ever for a

Newport-Mesa team -- after winning the CIF Southern Section Regional

title. She had expressed uncertainty about her future immediately

after the loss to St. Francis of Sacramento in the state title game.

Costa Mesa’s Olivia DiCamilli also has her jersey (No. 22) retired at

the banquet, the first in school history. DiCamilli, headed to San

Diego State, goes on to earn her fourth-straight All-CIF recognition.
