Covering world issues, like a war, from a community paper standpoint

is difficult. Besides the few people within our area that are serving

overseas, the Newport-Mesa area seems like a far reach from the front

lines of the war in the Middle East.

I see where the protesters are coming from. Everyone has a right

to there own opinion. For me and any photojournalist, staying

objective and unbiased helps me stay out of it and helps me to be

level-headed in presenting photos for our readers.

Daily war protests and demonstrations have been the most obvious

impact that the war has on this area. Daily Pilot photographer Kent

Treptow, just like the rest of us on the photo staff, has covered a

fair share of war protest and demonstrations since the military

buildup and the start of the war. And like most of them they are

becoming routine. I guess it is our duty to be there in case

something out of the ordinary happens.
