Anteaters chew up Huskies, 8-3

* COLLEGE: The UC Irvine baseball team snapped Washington’s 11-game

win streak with a 8-3 victory to even the series at a game apiece,

Saturday night at Anteater Ballpark.

UCI freshman catcher Mark Wagner drove in UCI’s first run with a

double to score Chris Klemm in the bottom of the first. Washington

designated hitter Chad Boudon’s leadoff home run tied the game in the

second, but the Anteaters answered with a three-run second and a

two-run third, staking starting pitcher Brett Smith to a 6-1 lead.

After giving up the home run, Smith retired the next 10 batters,

before Aaron Hathaway would get a single in the top of the fifth.

The Huskies scored twice in the top of the seventh, getting a run

on a UCI error and a sacrifice fly by Justin Drake.

The Anteaters answered again in their half of the seventh on

Washington’s fifth error of the game and a wild pitch by reliever

David Dowling.

The Huskies threatened in the ninth leading off with a single and

a walk, but reliever Michael Koehler got the next three in order to

close the door.

Smith (4.63) earned a team-high fifth win (5-1) as the Anteaters

improved to 10-15 overall. Washington starting pitcher Jeff Petersen

fell to 1-2 after yielding six runs on seven hits in three innings of

work. With the loss, Washington falls to 15-7 overall.

The two teams meet in the series finale today at 1 p.m. at

Anteater Ballpark.

Newport Harbor falls, 3-1, to Ocean View * HIGH SCHOOL: Ryan Torrey led off the fourth inning with a

double and scored on an RBI single by Ryan Rowe, but that would be

all the runs for Newport Harbor High’s baseball team Saturday in a

3-1 defeat to host Ocean View in the fifth and final game for both

teams in the Newport Elks Tournament.

Joe Cantarella went the distance on the hill for Newport,

scattering just four hits while striking out four. His counterpart,

Philip Hann, also went all seven innings and recorded six strikeouts.

Ocean View began the second with a single and double. The Seahawks

would push two runs across in the inning, one on a squeeze play, said

Newport Coach Joel Desguin.

Rowe, Torrey, Jeff Sanchez and Karo Makserjian all had hits for

Newport (2-6).

“We had runners on but just couldn’t get the hits to fall when we

needed to,” Desguin said.
