CdM wraps up tourney with win

Corona del Mar High’s boys volleyball team wrapped up play in the

Orange County Championships Saturday with a 15-0, 15-3 win over

Edison in the consolation bracket.

Kevin Welch paced the Sea Kings (5-7) with eight kills while Brian

Brinkerhoff added seven. Dominic Rubino played solid defense,

according to CdM Coach Steve Conti, and tallied nine digs

Earlier in the day CdM was defeated by Huntington Beach, 5-15,

15-10, 16-17, and by Fountain Valley, 12-15, 15-3, 13-15. Against

Fountain Valley, Welch tallied eight kills with Tom Welch collecting

six kills and three blocks and Greg Gabriel adding 21 assists.

CdM dropped a 13-15, 15-7, 14-16, match to Marina Friday and lost

to Capistrano Valley 10-15, 15-7, 12-15, the same day.

Kevin Welch led the Sea Kings with 11 kills against Marina while

Tom Welch tallied 10 followed by Bart Welch (four kills and seven

digs) and Miles Yourman (six). Bart Welch added 10 kills with

Yourman’s seven and Gabriel’s 32 assists against Capo Valley.

Eric Jones, Gunner McLellan and Brandon Sherick-Odom remained

sidelined because of injuries. Sherick-Odom and Jones have sprained

ankles and McLellan suffered a separated shoulder, Conti said. Austin

Brawner is recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL, but played

in the tournament and contributed, Conti added.

CdM will host its alumni game Friday at 7 p.m. Interested players

may show up or call (949) 515-6008 ext. 4024 to sign up. Food will be

provided for alumni and their families.

* Newport Harbor’s Sailors are 7-7 following Saturday’s play at

the Orange County Championships, the Tars posting an

11-15,15-12,15-10 win over Edison in pool play, then moving to the

quarterfinals where they lost to San Clemente, 15-4, 15-12, defeated

Marina, 15-6, 15-11, and lost to Dana Hills, 15-8, 15-2.

Mike Toole, Nedim Pajevic, Paul Toman, Morgan Govaars, Nick

Glassic, Adam Schlesinger and freshman Ted Slater all came through

with solid play for Harbor, while getting ready for a big task on

Friday, at Mira Costa.
