Estancia’sWase named Co-MVP
Estancia High junior Trisha Wase, who helped lead the Eagles to an
unbeaten Golden West League season, has been named Co-Most Valuable
Player by the league’s girls basketball coaches.
In addition to Wase, a 5-foot-4 point guard, Estancia seniors
Xochitl Byfield and Tisha Gray are first-team all-league selections,
as is Costa Mesa senior Rhondi Naff.
Estancia junior Nancy Castro and Costa Mesa senior Rickell Reeves
are third-team picks.
Wase, who shared Player of the Year laurels in the Pacific Coast
League as a sophomore, when she helped the Eagles win a
co-championship, averaged 12.3 points this season to help the Eagles
reach the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division III-A
Playoffs and finish 17-9. After a first-round bye, they were
eliminated by Harvard-Westlake.
Byfield, a 5-8 wing, averaged a team-leading 13.4 points, while
Gray, a 5-9 post, chipped in 11.6 ppg.
Naff, a 6-0 guard, averaged 18.5 points to help the Mustangs
finish third in league and post a 15-12 overall record. They lost in
the first round to La Canada.
Naff, Byfield and Gray were first-team all-league picks a year
ago, while Byfield and Gray were second-team All-PCL performers as
sophomores.
Castro, a 5-10 forward, averaged 6.3 points for the Eagles, while
Reeves, a 5-8 forward, averaged 6.3 points and led the Mustangs in
rebounding.
Biava Arganda, a Westminster High senior who will represent the
league in the Orange County All-Star Game, April 5 at Orange Coast
College, is the other Co-MVP.
