Tars’ Whitfield repeats

* GIRLS HOOPS: Newport Harbor High junior Jilliane Whitfield has

been named first-team All-Sea View League by the circuit’s girls

basketball coaches for a second straight season.

Whitfield, a 5-foot-7 guard, averaged 10.9 points, close to double

the Tars’ second-leading scorer, to help Coach Jen Thompson’s squad

earn an at-large berth into the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA

Playoffs.

It was the first postseason berth since 1999 for Newport Harbor’s

Sailors, whose three league victories included an upset of league

co-champion Aliso Niguel.

Junior Victoria Swigart, a 5-7 forward, is a second-team honoree.

She averaged 6.3 points for the Sailors, who finished 13-15.

Aliso Niguel senior guard Yvonne Stoddard and Woodbridge senior

forward Lauren Stepanski, whose Warriors shared the crown with the

Wolverines, are league Co-Players of the Year.
