Newport court gets bogus bomb threat
A bomb threat that turned out to be bogus was reported at the
Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach at 8 a.m. Friday, police said.
The threat was called in, Newport Beach Police Sgt. Steve Shulman
said, but no one was evacuated and no device was found..
Newport lifeguard tryouts set for Sunday
The Newport Beach Fire Department will hold open tryouts on Sunday
for seasonal lifeguard positions in the summer. About 40 people are
expected to qualify for a training class to be held later this
spring.
The department has received more than 100 applications. The
tryout, to begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Newport Pier, will include a
1,000-meter swim and a 1,000-meter run-swim-run. Starting pay for
seasonal lifeguards is $13.12 per hour.

Two chiefs to give preparedness talk
Mesa Verde Community Inc. will hold a meeting at 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday to talk about disaster preparedness. The informational
meeting will feature Fire Chief Jim Ellis and Costa Mesa Police Capt.
Tom Warnack. The officials will talk about how their departments are
working together to protect the city in a disaster.
The Costa Mesa Fire Department’s new Mesa Squad 85 fire engine
will be on display before the meeting.
The session will take place at the Mesa Verde United Methodist
