Breakers erupt late to down Bolsa Grande

In the first week of the 2003 season, the Laguna Beach High baseball

team has had the outcome of its first two games decided in the

seventh inning.

Trailing Bolsa Grande on Tuesday by a 5-4 count, the Breakers, in

their final at-bat, came up with a seven-run inning and went on to

score an 11-5 victory over the host Matadors in a consolation bracket

game of the Costa Mesa Tournament.

Andy Whalen and Chris Stansbury led Laguna’s offensive attack,

each going 2 for 3.

Whalen produced a pair of doubles and three RBI and Stansbury

drove in two more runs.

Stansbury also threw a strong five innings and exited the mound

with Laguna holding a 4-2 advantage.

He was replaced by junior right-hander Grant Harrell.

Bolsa Grande came up with a three-run rally itself to take a 5-4

lead through six innings, but Laguna’s seventh inning outburst was

enough to give Harrell his first victory of the season.

The seventh inning, however, wasn’t as kind to the Breakers in

their season opener.

They held a 4-2 lead over Cerritos in a first round tournament

game but the visiting Dons came up with three runs in the top of the

seventh, then held off Laguna in the bottom of the inning, to score a

5-4 win.

“We’ve been playing some good baseball but we just didn’t play a

full seven innings in that first game,” Laguna Coach Mike Schubert

said. “We’ve had some good hitting and some good pitching

performances in our first two games.”

Senior Jonathon Cedeno pitched a solid five innings against

Cerritos, yielding just one run.

In boys’ tennis, Laguna dropped a 12-6 nonleague match to host

Dana Hills.

The Breakers’ top doubles team of Jeff Ferguson and Eric Tran

swept their three opponents.
