Richard P. Nall

Richard P. Nall, a former Daily Pilot editor, died at his home in

Laguna Beach on Thursday. He was 73.

As assistant managing editor, Mr. Nall oversaw the sections of the

paper that published news from South County cities, former colleague

Chuck Loos said.

“Dick was simply one of the best newsmen I’ve worked with,” he

said. “He was cool under pressure and a great guy to work with and

have fun with.”

Mr. Nall was famous for the Kentucky Daily Derby parties he threw

at his home, an event that was a Daily Pilot tradition, Loos said.

A former football player, Mr. Nall’s big build often intimidated

young reporters, he recalled.

“But he was pretty soft spoken and quietly told people how things

ought to be done,” Loos said. “He was a good editor, good with the

language and a people person.”

Mr. Nall left his job at the Pilot to become a copy editor at the

Los Angeles Times’ Orange County bureau, he said.

Mr. Nall is survived by his wife, Teresa, and son Richard.

David Monge

David Monge, the pastor of Newport Harbor Lutheran Church, died

Wednesday of brain cancer. He was 57.

Mr. Monge had served as the pastor of the church for a little over

three years and was known to have been “a brilliant and thoughtful

man with a phenomenal sense of humor,” his friend Richard Nyberg

said.

“He had a wide perspective on life and was committed to service

and alleviation of suffering of others,” he said.

Nyberg said Mr. Monge died Wednesday evening as he was listening

to the church choir sing a Mozart composition by his bedside. He said

the pastor always had a sense of humor about his illness.

“I saw him on Saturday and he was cracking jokes about how he

could not remember much,” Nyberg said.

He said Mr. Monge had moved to the area from Minnesota. He also

published a book, “Life-Changing Faith for Today,” about the theology

of Martin Luther. Nyberg said the pastor resigned a month ago.

Mr. Monge is survived by wife Pam McCrea; five children; four

grandchildren; four brothers; and mother Mildred Monge.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Newport

Harbor Lutheran Church, 798 Dover Drive.

Paul Connally

Private services will be held for longtime Newport Beach resident

Paul Connally, who was involved at Hoag Hospital and the Newport

Harbor Nautical Museum. Mr. Connally died Wednesday after a brief

illness. He was 83. He is survived by wife Barbara; son Peter;

daughter Carol Fischer; and two grandchildren.
