Vargas blanks Breakers at Elks tournament

Costa Mesa High’s George Vargas struck out eight and walked two,

allowing three singles in a complete-game, eight-inning 1-0 victory

over the Laguna Beach Breakers Thursday in the third round of play in

the Newport Elks Tournament.

The Mustangs’ starter got some big help defensively with two

double plays, the second coming in the eighth inning on a 3-6-1

combination.

Adam Jorgenson drove in the winning run with a single and Mesa

improved to 2-1.

Pacifica 13, CdM 2

Lack of control doomed Corona del Mar against visiting Pacifica.

The Mariners (3-0) took advantage of seven walks and three hit

batters to trounce CdM, 13-2, at CdM High. Pacifica scored seven runs

in the second inning, starting with two outs and one baserunner.

“”We walked seven guys, which you don’t do. We put the ball in

play, but we gave 10 guys a free bag,” said CdM Coach John Emme.

Junior Nick Palchikoff pounded his second home run of the season,

a solo shot to lead off the sixth inning, and finished 2 for 3. Josh

Bradbury also went 2 for 3 with a double for CdM (2-1).

Newport wins, 14-7

Aggressive baserunning and putting the ball in play keyed Newport

Harbor High’s baseball team to a 14-7 win over Garden Grove at

Newport Harbor.

The Sailors (2-3) scored 11 runs in the middle innings, getting

production from several sources. R.J. Muller went 3 for 5, scored two

runs and had one RBI while Ryan Torrey went 2 for 4 with two runs

scored and three RBIs, including a single to score two runs in a

five-run third for Newport.

Ryan Rowe and Jeff Sanchez also collected singles and Mike McLean

added one RBI for Newport, which received solid bullpen relief from

Matt Erickson, who retired the side in order in the seventh inning.

Joe Cantarella got the victory.

Eagles rumble, 14-5

Estancia High’s Eagles exploded for a 10-run fourth inning and

banged out 14 hits in all as they belted host Bolsa Grande in a

13th-place semifinal Thursday.

Greg Hughes went 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs and scored

three runs, Jeremy Hauser was 2 for 5 with four RBIs and scored a

run, Tyler Hoffman was 2 for 5 and scored twice with one RBI, Cullen

Crom was 2 for 5 with a run scored and Matt Ronquillo capped it off

with a 3-for-3 performance with a run and RBI.
