D-backs claim 4-1 win over Giants

Steven Manning and Fletcher Della Grotta combined to pitch the

Diamondbacks over the Giants, 4-1, in Newport Beach Little League

Majors Division action. Tommy Colton caught all six innings.

Della Grotta, Dominic McCoy, Wes Chandler and Brian Hurst each

scored for the D-backs.

McCoy also sparkled defensively, sprinting across left field to

make a running catch.

Zack Maurer-Erickson threw a strong three innings and Kyle Jensen

scored on Scott Cook’s RBI hit.

In other Majors games:

* Cardinals 2, Yankees 0

Three strong innings on the mound by Michael Bloom and James

Petrilli propelled the Cardinals to victory.

Bloom struck out seven while Petrilli K’d six.

The Cardinals were led by Dillon Norton who singled, stole second

and scored.

Cory Vitalo, Josh and Jesse Starnes and Reed Zachman led the way

on defense.

The Yankees were paced on offense by Randall Nelson and Matt

Morris. Bret Weinberger and Tyler Haly also displayed solid play.

* The Dodgers erased a 3-0 deficit against the Yankees with a

four-run, two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a

victory in Majors action.

Kyle Hill got the victory with two innings of shut out relief

allowing no hits with five strikeouts. Hill also tallied the

game-winning RBI single.

In AAA play:

* Diamondbacks 10, Giants 5

The Diamondbacks improved to 2-0 with the win Saturday.

Cort Hastings led the pitching with no earned runs in two innings

and got relief from Trent Boras and Sandon Griffen.

Brian Smith and Griffen led the scoring, each with a two-run home

run, while Rodney Keller contributed two hits.

The Giants were paced by a home run off the bat of Emery Molnar,

while Grant Davis pitched well for two innings.

The D-backs also defeated the Dodgers, 12-1. Ben Greiner went 2

for 3 with a three-run home run and Chandler Miller also collected a

2-for-3 mark at the plate with a two-run four-bagger.
