Even after winning his second event of the day, Corona del Mar High’s

Chris Ringstrom looked ahead to the 1,600-meter relay, a sign he is

never satisfied.

The junior won the 200 (22.9) and 400 (51.2), helping CdM claim

victory in a nonleague tri-meet Wednesday at CdM High. The Sea Kings

earned 64 points to Newport Harbor’s 43, followed by Marina’s 28.

Ringstrom, along with junior Kevin Artz, Brandon Borcoman and

Blake Dillion, won the 1,600 relay in 3:30.3.

“I ran faster today than last week,” said Ringstrom of his 200

time.

Last week, Ringstrom won the 400 and took second in the 200

(23.2), while anchoring the 1,600 relay with Dillion, Borcoman and

Artz.

In addition to Ringstrom’s victories, five CdM runners claimed

wins Wednesday, including Artz in the 1,600. He took the lead after

two laps and increased the margin between he and his closest

competition to cross the finish line in 4:36.9.

“I was determined to get this race,” said Artz, who attended

Newport Harbor High as a freshman. “It proves that if you want it bad

enough, you’ll do it. I was surprised with my time today. I’m good

friends with Nick Miller (Newport Harbor) and we’ve raced each other

on and off over the years.”

He also won the 3,200 (10:32.8).

Newport senior Alec Urtusuastegui also knows Artz from his time at

Newport. The current Sailor raced to first in the 800 (2:02.30) --

ahead of Artz.

“With 300 meters left, I just took off and hoped he couldn’t stay

with me,” Urtusuastegui said. “The last 100 meters was the funnest

part of the whole race. I was stoked.”

Other Newport winners were Joel Walker in the 100 (11.3) and Jon

Szecsei in the discus (131-2).

CdM winners included Eemaan Jalili in the 110 high hurdles, Andrew

Wong in the long jump (18-7 1/2), Stephen Minard in the high jump

(5-10) and Ross McKee in the 300 intermediate hurdles. CdM’s 400

relay team of Ringstrom, Matthew Morris, Dillion and Michael Caponera

won in 44.0.

“Ringstrom and Kevin Artz did very well,” Sumner said.
