Kona makeover should be welcomed
I’ve read with concern the letters against the change from the
little-used bowling alley, Kona Lanes, to a new department store,
Kohl’s, which would be used by many.
One of the biggest complaints against the change is the potential
effect of traffic in the area. Indeed, there would be a change. Many
mothers with children could walk to the department store, thus saving
vehicle use on the boulevard. Lots of the (demeaned, I think, by many
in letters to the editor) senior citizens could walk to the store,
also. In addition, the smaller shops on Harbor Boulevard would
benefit by the new visitors to the area. Some of the letters cite the
bowling alley as historical. I find that difficult to comprehend. The
Estancia Adobe is history.
The lack of rock concerts in Costa Mesa was mentioned. Rock
concerts were stopped because the people living in the area of the
concert arena did not want them. It wasn’t the city who did it on
their own volition.
And, as for not having a bowling alley in town because some people
really enjoy bowling: Well, my granddaughter enjoys bull-riding, and
there is no bull-riding arena available in Costa Mesa. She must go to
Norco to practice. We want to sky dive, para-glide, water ski, snow
ski, horseback ride, rope steers, etc. However, each of those things
require us to go elsewhere. I’m pleased it’s that way. Wouldn’t it be
awful, if everything was at our fingertips? We would never meet
people in to other cities, dine in other cafes or experience the joys
of travel.
Lastly, if Costa Mesa were strictly a bedroom community, our taxes
would be astronomical. I welcome a new addition to our city, and some
additional dollars in taxes.
