Pacifica puts Tars away, 3-2

Newport Harbor High baseball team is anxiously awaiting the chance at
a different opponent Thursday after losing to Pacifica, 3-2, for the
third time in four days in the Costa Mesa bracket quarterfinals of
the Newport Elks Tournament Tuesday at Newport Harbor.
Two unearned runs, including the decisive tally in the sixth,
helped the Mariners advance to meet Corona del Mar in Thursday’s
semifinals.
Newport, which lost, 10-2 and 16-0, to the Mariners in a nonleague
doubleheader Saturday, had runners at first and second in the
seventh, but a two-out line drive by R.J. Muller was stabbed by a
leaping second baseman to end the threat.
Newport starter Ryan Torrey pitched five strong innings, while
junior Karo Makserjian paced the Sailors’ six hit attack by going 2
for 3, including a two-run third-inning single to drive in Dave and
Matt Erickson.
The Sailors (1-3) host Garden Grove in a fifth-place semifinal
Thursday at 3 p.m.
