Costa Mesa outlasts Sea Kings

* SOFTBALL: It wasn’t the best day to be a pitcher Tuesday, as Costa
Mesa High and visiting Corona del Mar squared off for a good
old-fashion nonleague softball slugfest.
The Mustangs were outhit, 11-10, but managed a 13-7 triumph in a
battle of former Pacific Coast League rivals.
Costa Mesa junior cleanup hitter Jane-E Yamamoto made the Sea
Kings pay for walking senior slugger Ann Marie Topps twice ahead of
her. Yamamoto went 3 for 4 with an RBI, stole two bases and scored
three runs.
Topps still managed to double and drive in two runs to bring her
season total to 14 RBIs in three games. She also scored three times.
Mesa broke it open with a five-spot in the fourth, including a
two-run single by Michelle Miller, an RBI triple by Jennifer Jordan
and a single off the fence by Paulina Rodriguez.
Miller finished with three RBIs and scored twice, while Kelly
Topps belted an RBI triple for the winners.
* GOLF: The UC Irvine women’s golf team won the Anteater
Invitational by two strokes over Cal State Northridge at the Coto de
Caza Golf and Racquet Club in Coto de Caza, Tuesday. The Anteaters
shot a third round total of 310 to finish the tournament with a score
of 925 (313-302-310) , two shots ahead of Cal State Northridge 927
(308-311-308). Angela Won led UCI with a 77-73-74 -- 224.
* TENNIS: UC Irvine’s men’s tennis team swept the visiting
Montana State Bobcats, 7-0, to improve to 8-7. Zoran Korac, Jon
Endrikat, Brian Morton, Greg Biorkman, Peter Surapol and Eric Yandoc
all won.
* HOOPS: Pat Douglass, who led UCI to an 19-8 regular-season
record and 67 wins the last three years, has been named Big West
Conference Coach of the Year by CollegeInsider.com.
* SOCCER: UC Irvine women’s soccer Coach Marine Cano signed six
to national letters of intent: Lauryn Birkenshaw (Aliso Niguel), Jodi
Borba (Atascadero), Aleese Hernandez (Capistrano Valley), Dayna
Knowles (Dana Hills), Britney Webster (Capistrano Valley) and Marissa
Welliver (Aliso Niguel).
* COLLEGES: UC Davis will join the Big West Conference, moving
from NCAA Division II to Division I, the school’s Chancellor Larry
Vanderhoef announced Tuesday. The Aggies’ move will replace Utah
State’s eventual departure into the Sun Belt Conference, which will
go in effect in the 2005-06 season.
* SOFTBALL: Newport Harbor High senior pitcher Kim Moore did not
allow a hit through six innings and went 2 for 3 at the plate,
leading the Sailors’ softball team to a 10-0 nonleague win over
visiting Santiago Tuesday.
Newport (3-0) recorded its third shutout in as many games and
Moore earned her third pitching win. Of her 62 pitches, 46 were
strikes and she struck out eight of the 17 batters she faced.
* GOLF: Estancia High senior Jason Cassidy shot par-36 to give
the Eagles boys golf team an advantage in its first round of play
against Sunny Hills at Mesa Verde Country Club Tuesday.
The Eagles (1-0) scored 194 to Sunny Hills’ 215, as Estancia
freshman Marcus Sostak shot 38, and senior Ryan Brown came in at 39.
The Las brothers, Greg (freshman) and Jason (junior) finished at 40
and 41, respectively.
* GOLF: Corona del Mar High’s boys golf team improved to 4-0
with a twin victory over Mission Viejo and defending CIF champion
Woodbridge in a nine-hole match at Newport Beach Country Club
Tuesday.
CdM, led by medalist Nick Sherman’s 34, won with a 194 over the
par-35 course. Mission Viejo (196) and Woodbridge (202) trailed.
Other Sea Kings: Zack Rabinovich (36), Robert Ury (39), Brad
Chamberlin (42) and Tim Frohling and Alex Chikovani (each at 43).
* TENNIS: Costa Mesa High’s boys tennis team dropped a 12-6
Golden West League decision at Ocean View, falling to 0-2, 0-1 in
league.
Huy Pham (singles) and Garrett Sneen and Daniel Gomez (doubles)
stood out for the Mustangs with two victories each.
* SOFTBALL: The Sage Hill School softball team defeated nonleague
host Tarbut V’Torah, 15-0, Tuesday to improve to 2-0 this season.
Catheryn Dailey pitched three hitless innings and was 2 for 4 with
two RBIs to key the mercy-rule win.
* SOFTBALL: Behind the arm of starting pitcher Evelyn Flores’s
12 strikeouts, the Estancia High girls softball team improved to 2-1
with a 7-1 nonleague victory over visiting University Tuesday.
Shortstop Rebecca Kaplan went 3 for 4 to go with Hilary Ockey’s
2-for-4 performance. Allison Wayman went 3 for 4 with a double in the
hit parade. Flores improves to 1-1.
