Longtime distance running coach Charlie Appell will be in charge of
the Estanica High girls track and field team this season. And, along
with Appell calling the shots, there’s sure to be some bluntness, yet
definite improvement before the season is over. Take Appell’s outlook
on the season for example. He hardly holds anything back.
“We’re in for a long season,” said Appell, who also coaches the
school’s boys and girls cross country teams. “I’m just being truthful
because we’re short on experience.”
Appell replaces Joan Carlisle, who remains a teacher at Estancia.
He said while the Eagles will be learning the ropes heading into
their entry of the Golden West League, crosstown rival Costa Mesa
appears to be a favorite to win the title, along with Westminster and
Santa Ana.
Individually speaking, Estancia is sure to find success. Senior
Diana Rosete, the Golden West League cross country champion, reached
the CIF Finals last year in the 3,200 meters.
The Eagles also feature senior Ludi Valdez, who will compete in
the hurdles and relays, senior Amanda Abbott (jumps), sophomore
Rachel McMasters (hurdles), junior Erika Plietez (sprints) and junior
Nancy Castro (throws).
“Four of those six could possibly go to CIF,” Appell said. “Amanda
(will be) a four-year varsity letterwinner, and Diana and Ludi have
been on varsity for three years.”
Estancia will be without twin sisters Hanni and Jasmine Geider,
who produced points and are now competing at Orange Coast College.
Appell said Haven Barnes, originally from Connecticut, will coach
the sprints, alum Frough Jahid will be the jumps coach and Jeremy
Villa will head the throws.
