Costa Mesa will consider redevelopment
City leaders will again consider the prospect of adding more than
400 acres to the downtown redevelopment zone Monday, albeit in a
larger auditorium than the one that couldn’t handle an overflow crowd
last month.
On Monday, the Redevelopment Agency -- council members acting
under a different title -- will consider approving the preliminary
boundaries for the odd-shaped area, which is roughly bordered by 15th
Street, Whittier Avenue and West 19th Street.
On Feb. 10, the Redevelopment Agency had to postpone its meeting
after a large, emotional crowd of industrial property owners tried to
squeeze into the Police Department auditorium and ended up posing a
fire hazard.
The owners are worried they may be included in the zone because
they don’t feel their property is blighted, either economically or
physically, and they fear the city would be able to take their
property through eminent domain.
The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Neighborhood
Community Center at 1845 Park Ave. For information, call (714)
754-5635.
Habitat for Humanity home to be built today
More than 30 volunteers will be on hand to break ground on the
100th Habitat for Humanity home on Saturday in Costa Mesa. Dozens of
employees from local Home Depot stores will join volunteers from
Habitat for Humanity of Orange County to begin building a home
earmarked for a low-income family.
For the 100th house built, Home Depot volunteers will be working
with the future homeowners, providing hands-on support once a week
until the home is completed this fall.
Throughout the building process, there will be several
opportunities for community members to lend assistance. The 100th
house is part of a six-home building project.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday at
1925 Pomona Ave. To volunteer, visit www.habitatoc.org.
