Lightning trio All-Academy choices

* BOYS BASKETBALL: Sage Hill School senior Michael Fitzhugh and

junior Kevin Joyce, who helped lead the Lightning to a third-place

finish and its first CIF Southern Section playoff berth in the

program’s two-season varsity history, have been named first-team

All-Academy League by the circuit’s coaches.

Fitzhugh, a versatile 6-3 performer who played all five positions

for Coach Steve Keith, averaged 22.3 points and 10.1 rebounds to earn

repeat all-league laurels.

Joyce, a 6-3 junior, averaged 15.1 points and 4.7 rebounds and

netted a team-high 48-three-pointers to help the Lightning finish

11-14.

Sophomore guard Matt Loper is a second-team selection. He averaged

3.8 points for the Lightning.

St. Margaret’s senior Jeff Schaffer, who led St. Margaret’s to an

undefeated regular season, is the league’s MVP.

Wright a first-team choice

* GIRLS BASKETBALL: Sage Hill School freshman Haywood Wright,

who led the Lightning to a CIF Southern Section Division IV-A

at-large playoff berth, tops three Sage girls basketball players

named All-Academy League by coaches.

Wright, a 6-foot-1 forward who averaged a team-high 12.5 points,

is a first-team honoree.

Senior guard Carrie Clark (8.8 points per game) and 6-2 sophomore

center Katie Puishys (10.5 ppg) earned second-team laurels for the

Lightning, which lost a third-place playoff, then won a CIF Division

IV-A playoff game, before falling in the second round to finish 14-8.

Sage Hill freshman guard Debbie Yoder-Lee received honorable

mention.

Veronica Woi, a senior from Whitney High, is the Most Valuable

Player.

Werblin, Gordon first-team

* GIRLS SOCCER: Sage Hill School sophomores Amy Werblin and

Laura Gordon have been recognized by Academy League coaches as

first-team all-league performers in girls soccer.

Junior Megan Curry and freshman Sara Becker represent the

Lightning on the second team. The coaches selected Barbara Cormalis,

a junior at the Oxford Academy, as the league’s Most Valuable Player.
