Reds power nets extra-inning win

Nine runs in the top of the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and gave

the Reds an 11-2 victory over the Diamondbacks in the opening game of

the Newport Beach Little League Majors division Saturday.

Joey Booth started the scoring with an RBI single with the bases

loaded and Kevin Wang, Dylan Davis and Will Morrow all had RBIs

during the rally.

Joe Frey preserved the victory, holding the D-backs scoreless in

the bottom of the seventh.

The D-backs received steady starting pitching from Fletcher Della

Grotta, who held the Reds scoreless over three innings, as he faced

only 10 batters. He allowed no hits while striking out five and

walking none.

The Reds took a 2-0 led in the fourth when Timmy Winning lined a

fastball down the left-field line for an RBI triple. Winning stole

home on a passed ball later in the inning.

Sean Tokuyama and Frey pitched well for the Reds.

The D-backs came back in the sixth inning, as Michael Epstein

scored the first run on a sacrifice fly by Steven Manning. Tommy

Colton later stole home to score the tying run.

The Reds and D-backs faced each other in last season’s

championship game, won by the D-backs in extra innings.

In Majors action Monday:

* Mariners 6, Angels 5

The Mariners loaded the bases in the ninth inning and defeated the

Angels.

John Doering gave the Mariners five strong innings with three from

Nick Freeman, and Patrick Werline closed out the game. William Ham

caught all nine innings.

J.D. Abbott, Lee Cowan, Chris Freeman, Michael Hay, Chad Morabito,

Chase Nugent and Chase Ross all tallied hits and displayed some

strong defense.

Pederson paces Dodgers

Nick Pederson pitched the Dodgers to a 6-5 victory over the

Diamondbacks to open up Majors play in Costa Mesa National Little

League action Saturday.

Pederson struck out 11 batters.

After giving up three runs in the first inning, the Dodgers’

defense, led by returning catcher Mikey Morley, held the D-backs to

two runs the rest of the way.

Cody Green led the offense with two hits along with Matt Telles,

Bryan Maurer and Colemen Brown.

The Giants defeated the Padres, 8-7, in nine innings in the other

Majors game Saturday.

In Farm Division action:

* The Dodgers opened solidly against the D-backs.

A.J. Fischer went 5 for 5 with three runs scored and Jeff Carlyle,

Robert Sullivan, Kayla Hayes and Ben Beck each had four hits.

Sullivan recorded an unassisted double play while playing first

base.

Yeizon Ramirez played in his first organized baseball game, and

singled in his first three at bats. He also made a solid defensive

play at third.

Vasquez ignites Sox

The Newport Harbor Baseball Association’s season got a jump start

on the second pitch of the Majors game Saturday when Red Sox slugger

Arturo Vasquez homered deep over the right-centerfield fence. He

later doubled and singled and scored twice as the Red Sox defeated

the Yankees in the featured game of Opening Day ar Mariners Park.

Red Sox starter Danny Moskovits struck out eight of the 10 batters

he faced in three innings of work. Moskovitz doubled and scored a

run. Alex Rios closed out the game with two innings of scoreless

pitching, caught for four innings and had a single.

Josh Bowman and Max Joliffe each chipped in with hits, and Andrew

Taylor and Adam Lagor each scored runs.

In another Majors game:

* Giants 7, Yankees 5: Jack Grace, Eric Holland and Jacob McCann

shared pitching duties for thke Giants. Jake Caughill scored the

Giants’ first run of the season. Solid offensive work continued and

well-placed hits were delivered by Mark Carscadden, James Cunningham,

Eric Chebil, Jake Dawson and Sean Mangano.

In the Mustang Division:

* The Angels took an 8-0 lead and held off the Astros to win,

10-5, in the opening game in the Mustang Division of the Newport

Harbor Baseball Association Sunday.

Nelson Simons had three innings of no-hit baseball and also

tallied two hits with one double.

The Astros were led by Austin Metzger, who had one double and also

pitched two scoreless innings. The Astros had the bases loaded in the

last inning, but the Angels made the final out.

In the Pinto Division:

* The Blue Jays of the Newport Harbor Baseball Association opened

play Saturday at Newport Heights School.

Each Blue Jay got a base hit.

Remington Weiss fielded well and Shaun Vetrovec slammed a home run

during his last at bat. Chris Dinatale also hit well.
