Costa Mesa boy will compete in L.A. Marathon

Kendall Milteer, an 11-year-old Costa Mesa resident suffering from

tuberous sclerosis, will compete in the L.A. Marathon today thanks to

training and help from Grace Castro, a supervisor at AbilityFirst in

Costa Mesa. Castro will push Kendall’s wheelchair for the 26.2 miles

this morning. The center has more than 30 people participating in the

marathon to about $5,000 from sponsors for the center.

The state dealt the Coast Community College District the fourth

highest blow in additional budget cuts announced Wednesday, because

the state overestimated property tax revenue. The district is

expected to cut about $1.3 million, in addition to the $5 to $9

million already expected by the end of the fiscal year, which occurs

June 30. Orange Coast College officials anticipate that they’ll have

to add yet another $1 million to $2.8 million in cuts already

expected of the college.

At an awards banquet held Feb. 13, the Newport-Mesa Unified

Federation of Teachers presented Teacher of the Year awards, which

included a $2,500 check, to 30 teachers throughout the district.

Three teachers -- Judy Taylor of Lincoln Elementary, Cheri Sheldon of

Costa Mesa High School’s middle school and Pauline Maranian of

Estancia High School -- were selected as the district’s top teachers.

Taylor and Maranian move ahead to compete in the Orange County

competition.

Six students from Antibes, France, returned their country Friday

after spending two weeks in Newport Beach. The students, who came to

Newport as part of the Newport Beach Sister Cities Assn.’s student

exchange program, spent one week touring the city and the second

attending classes at Corona del Mar High School.
