Pirates come up short, 10-9
MISSION VIEJO -- Orange Coast College saw leads of 2-1, 3-2 and 7-6
slip away, then had a ninth-inning rally fall just short in a 10-9
Orange Empire Conference-opening baseball loss Friday at Saddleback.
The Pirates (8-5-1) had big offensive days from Ryan Mathes, Jared
Carchio and Ben Hanna, but could not overcome the Gauchos, who scored
four in the seventh to take a 10-7 lead, then held on, stranding the
tying and go-ahead run on base in OCC’s two-run ninth.
Mathes, a sophomore left-fielder had five RBIs, including a
three-run homer in the fifth and an RBI single in the ninth.
Carchio, a freshman third baseman, went 3 for 5 with a double and
a two-run homer, while Hanna, a freshman second baseman, was 3 for 5
and scored three times.
