CdM prevails in first round with 2-1 win
MURRIETA -- Corona del Mar High’s girls soccer team improved to
11-5-2 with a dominating 2-1 victory over host Murrieta Valley in the
first round of the CIF Division II Playoffs Friday.
The victory sends the Sea Kings into Tuesday’s second round as the
home team against Century League representative Canyon, starting at 3
p.m.
Canyon defeated Rialto in the first round, 7-0.
Jenny Long got CdM ahead in the 29th minute when she took the ball
down the right side and shot from the top of the 18-yard box, sending
the ball into the back post.
Twenty minutes later Alivia Mazura, by way of a Paige Janes’
throw-in and Long’s flick, sent the ball to the back post for the 2-0
lead.
Murrieta Valley’s only goal came when a cross hit off a CdM shin
guard and the ball caromed into the goal in the 60th minute to avert
a shutout.
CdM outshot the hosts, 8-0.
Tanisha Senaratne, who had no saves, twice caused turnovers as
Murrieta Valley was unable to get off a legitimate shot on goal.
Janes and Kinzie Kramer were sharp defensively and Elisha Morgan
controlled the middle.
