Donald A. Ackley

Donald A. Ackley, a longtime Orange Coast College librarian and

dean of library and media services, died Saturday from cancer. He was

58.

A Huntington Beach resident, Mr. Ackley joined OCC’s faculty in

1971 as an evening librarian and quickly climbed the ranks to head

librarian and then dean of library and media services.

Mr. Ackley’s accomplishments include establishing a Macintosh lab,

creating electronic databases for full-text journal and newspaper

articles and establishing a collection of rare books for the library.

He maintained the college’s official campus archives and designed and

launched OCC’s first Web site more than 10 years ago.

He also received a Friend of the Students Award from the

Associated Students Assn. Mr. Ackley was still on staff at the time

of his death. He is survived by his wife, Claudia Jackson.

A private family service will be held. The college is also

planning to have a service remembering Mr. Ackley next month. A date

has not been set yet.

Rita Marie Fitzpatrick

A funeral service and burial were held Wednesday for Rita Marie

Fitzpatrick, a 15-year resident of Corona del Mar. Ms. Fitzpatrick

died Saturday of natural causes. She was 87. She is survived by son

Dennis Fitzpatrick, daughters Sharon Hanson, Ciel and Maureen

Fitzpatrick, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Donna Marsh

A burial at sea is planned for Donna Marsh, a former teacher at

Ensign Middle School. Ms. Marsh died Sunday after a lengthy illness.

She was 68. Ms. Marsh was also a member of the Newport Mesa

Assistance League, Orange County Republican Women, Red Ribbon chapter

of the American Red Cross, Balboa Harbor Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta

and the Trojan Guild of Orange County. She is survived by her twin

sister, Devonne Villafuerte, nieces Carol and Robin and nephew

Richard.
