Day snaps record with 5-101/4 jump

Costa Mesa High senior Sharon Day, the defending state champion in

the girls high jump, added the Los Angeles Indoor Invitational to her

list of credits Saturday, skying to a scholastic meet-record

5-foot-10 1/4 at the Sports Arena Saturday.

The previous record was 5-10 by Julie Jenkins in 1992.

Day, who has also accepted an invitation to the Indoor National

Scholastic Championships in New York City March 14, was forced to a

third effort at 5-6, 5-8 and 5-10 before getting comfortable with the

indoor surroundings and negotiating the height.

She just missed at 6-feet, according to her father, Eugene Day.

Second to Day was Stockdale High freshman Desirae Gonder, who went

5-8.
