Arizona starter Sean Riersen threw a two-hit, complete game shutout
to down the UC Irvine Anteaters, 6-0, Saturday night.
The Wildcats gave Riersen all the run support he would need with a
four-run fourth inning.
Brian Anderson, whose triple scored Derek Decatur for the first
run, ended the night going 3 for 5 with a run and two RBIs. Nick
Hundley and Jeff Van Houten each went 2 for 4.
UCI starter Brett Smith (1-1) was hit with the loss, pitching six
innings and giving up five runs on 10 hits, while striking out six.
Riersen (1-0) was impressive on the mound, strikeout five and
facing the minimum in five innings as Arizona improved to 5-3. UC
Irvine falls to 2-4 overall with the loss.
It was the second straight loss by shutout for the Anteaters, who
have not been able to solve Arizona pitching, at all.
Right-hander Michael Koehler (0-0) will try to stop the bleeding
today when he faces Arizona’s Richie Gardner (1-0) in the three-game
series finals, starting at 1.
