NEWPORT TEENS OUTREACH
On Feb. 21 and 22, the “Salt-n-Light” youth group at St. Matthew’s
Church plans to be a part of the annual World Vision 30-Hour Famine.
On Feb. 21, the students will hold a weeklong food drive to benefit
the hungry in South Orange County. On Feb. 22, they will deliver the
food they collect to Saddleback Community Outreach. The group will
fast for 30 hours, and the funds raised for this fast will be used
for emergency relief efforts and long-term development projects in
Third World countries. Anyone interested in donating food or in

TOT SHABBAT SERVICES AND PIZZA DINNER
On Friday evening, March 7, at 5:30 p.m., Tot Shabbat services
will be led by Rabbi Arnold Rachlis and Cantor Ruti Braier. At 6
p.m., there will be a Shabbat pizza dinner. Dinner reservations can
be made by calling Christine Goldhammer at (714) 573-9951. At 7 p.m.,
family services for all ages with Rabbi Rachlis and Cantor Braier
will be held. At 8 p.m., after services for adults, Rabbi Sheila
Weinberg will speak on “Encountering Buddhism and Judaism: Paths to
Spiritual Renewal”. Child care will be provided during Rabbi
Weinberg’s presentation. University Synagogue is at 4915 Alton

JEWS DOWN UNDER
On Friday, March 14, at 8 p.m. Rabbi Arnold Rachlis and Cantor
Ruti Braier will lead Shabbat services in which Rabbi Rachlis will
speak on “Jews Down Under: Travels in Australia and New Zealand,”
reporting on the recent congregational visit to Sydney, Melbourne,
the Great Barrier Reef and the aborigines in Australia, and
Christchurch, Queenstown, the fjords of Milford Sound and Auckland in

AIDS HOME-BASED CARE PROGRAM
St. Mark Presbyterian Church of Newport Beach will be collecting
supplies for a home-based care program for people with HIV/AIDS in
the sub-Saharan region of Africa. The program trains local church
volunteers in Africa in the specifics of caring for HIV/AIDS
patients. Each trained volunteer will then instruct and guide 10
HIV/AIDS patients and their caregivers in optimum care. The program
will be launched Sunday and run for several weeks.
HARMONICA BAROQUE PLAYERS PERFORMANCE
The Harmonica Baroque Players will perform on Sunday, Feb. 23, at
4 p.m. at the Newport Harbor Lutheran Church at 798 Dover St. in

NOTED JEWISH SCHOLAR
Prof. Shalom Paul, noted scholar and Biblical expert, is coming
from Jerusalem, Israel to serve as Orange County’s second annual
one-month Jewish Scholar in Residence under the auspices of the
Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program at the Jewish

BAHAI FIRESIDES
Members of the Bahai faith hold informal public discussions on
spiritual topics at 7:30 p.m. every Friday and 11:30 the last Sunday
of the month. The talks include brunch or dinner. Also, interfaith

ZEN JUMPSTART
The Zen Center of Orange County will offer a six-week “Zen

A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY
A 26-lesson study on the life of Jesus Christ titled “Journey to

MEDITATION LESSONS
A “lectio divina” meditation group meeting is held at 7:10 a.m.
Tuesdays at Our Lady Queen of Angels, 2046 Mar Vista Drive, Newport
Beach. Lectio is a style of meditation that includes using Scripture
or a special reading as a stimulus. Free. The Christian Meditation
Group meets from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of

FOR OLDER WOMEN
The Jewish Family Service offers a support group for women older
than 50 to address issues such as anxiety at 10 a.m. on the second

NEW GROUPS
Jewish Family Service of Orange County has formed a bereavement
support group that meets at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and a Challenge of
Change support group that meets at 10 a.m. Thursdays. Both groups

service is also forming a parenting support group to meet the first
and third Mondays of each month at 10 a.m. at the Jewish Federation
