Seahawks survive pair of thrillers

Two free throws by Matt Sargeant followed by a Jeff Wilson basket in

the closing moments of overtime lifted visiting Ocean View to a 66-63

boys’ basketball victory over Santa Ana.

The hard-fought victory gave the Seahawks a share of their fifth

consecutive Golden West League championship.

At 10-0, Ocean View had a three-game lead in the standings,

heading into this week’s action.

Just three league contests remained on the schedule, as of

Wednesday.

Sargeant finished the game with 18 points but it was guard Casey

Ortiz, who also came up with five steals, who paced Ocean View with

22 points.

The Seahawks stepped out of league play to battle Orange Lutheran

and it took Bear Wurt’s last-second layup for Ocean View to pull out

a 58-57 road victory.

Wurt scored 10 points overall.

Ortiz again led Ocean View with 12 points and Sargeant finished

with 11.

In the Sunset League boys’ basketball race, Marina pieced together

a four-game league win streak to break out of the middle of the pack

to claim a share of the league title.

The Vikings clinched a portion of the crown by coming up with a

big, second half effort to turn a two-point halftime lead into an

83-64 victory over visiting Edison.

Earlier in the game, Matt McNease led a second quarter charge that

saw the Vikings turn a 20-13 deficit into a 34-32 advantage at the

half.

Matt Brennan scored 18 of his game-high 24 points in the second

half and James Lambert contributed 21 points as Marina paired a

stingy defense and a successful fastbreak to break open a tight game.

Steve Cornett scored 14 points, David Huff had 12 and Alex Wright

scored 11 to lead Edison.

Marina also dropped Huntington Beach from a share of the league

lead with a 51-47 victory.

The host Vikings overcame a fourth quarter deficit by hitting

three consecutive three-point shots. Brennan scored 15 points,

Lambert had 13 and McNease finished with 10.

Marina hit seven three-point shots overall with Brennan and

McNease each netting two.

Jason McLaughlin led Huntington with 22 points and Bret Van

Voorhis added 12.

Huntington also dropped another road heartbreaker, this one to

Esperanza by a 50-49 score. James Bailey led the Oilers with 15

points and Van Voorhis had 10.

Edison dropped a tough one to rival Fountain Valley, losing,

55-54.

Billy Braun scored 11 points and Cornett had 10 for the Chargers.

In Sunset League girls’ basketball, Edison solidified its standing

atop the league standings following a 58-29 win over Marina.

Eva Camarena, a recent addition to the Chargers lineup, scored 15

points with nine coming on three, three-point shots. Rebecca Kepilino

was next for Edison with 14 points.

Huntington Beach gave Edison some breathing room in the standings

by knocking off host Esperanza, 42-24. The Oilers were led by Katia

Hadj-Hamou and Alisha Mountford who scored 13 and 12 points,

respectively.

In Golden West League girls’ basketball, Ocean View fell to Santa

Ana, 50-45. Elyse McNeff scored 15 points and Ahkiah Hunter had 13

for the Seahawks.

Ocean View also dropped a 56-51 nonleague game to Dana Hills.

McNeff and Vanessa Alderfer each scored 17 points to lead the

Seahawks.
