Newport Beach settles for 1-1 tie with North Irvine
Newport Beach’s Jay Ordaz scored off a direct free kick to tie Irvine
North, 1-1, in boys under-12 Gold All-Star soccer action Saturday.
Midfielders Tim Barela, Easton Giedt and Kyle Evans kept Newport
close and allowed Ordaz to score the tying goal.
Strong goalkeeping by Hayden Navarro in the fourth quarter held
Irvine to just one goal.
Defensive pressure from Tom Badum and Derek Boler kept the game
scoreless in the first quarter.
Joel Betonte and Jeff Newman had two shots on goal for Newport,
which lost its second game Saturday to South Irvine, 3-1.
Betonte tied it in the third quarter on a pass from Ordaz and
Newport kept the pressure with numerous shots on goal by Eric Holland
and Evans.
Irvine scored two goals in the fourth quarter to secure the
winning margin.
Justin Faber played strong defense in the first quarter before
Irvine took a 1-0 lead in the second quarter.
Doering’s hat trick ignites CdM boys
* SOCCER: John Doering scored three straight goals to lead the
Corona del Mar boys under-12 Area Q soccer All-Stars of AYSO Region
57 to a 6-0 victory over Irvine, equaling the highest scoring output
of the season.
Camden Nicholson, Bunk Hooper and Mike McKenna each scored one
goal, set up by the passing of Ori Tabak, Wes Baker, Hunter Alder and
Cory Donavan
The defensive backfield of James Cunningham, Tommy Banghert, Matt
Cohen, Connor Bannan and goalkeeper Kendall Pick allowed few shots on
goal and began most of the scoring chances with clear outs and
steals.
CdM remains in first place and can clinch the area championship
with a win over Newport on Saturday at Andersen Field at 10:30 a.m.
If Newport wins it advances to the sectional playoffs in Los
Alamitos.
Blues find ‘Clues’ to championship
* SOCCER: Victories over South Irvine and Costa Mesa allowed the
Corona del Mar girls under-12 Silver All-Star soccer team (the Blues
Clues) to secure a first-place finish in AYSO Area Q play.
Claire Schmidt and Amanda Johnson each scored goals in a 2-0
victory over South Irvine.
CdM defeated Mesa, 2-1, on goals from Schmidt on a breakaway in
the first quarter and Megan Otterbein on a looping pass from Rebecca
Beyer in the second period.
Taylor Rhodes cleared the box and McKenna Caskey made several
saves in goal. Solid defense from Rylie LeVasseur, Layne Kelley and
Alexa Cohen with crisp passing and blocking from midfielders Kimberly
Condino, Valerie Avila and Kelsey Davis helped seal the victory.
Forward Kathryn Conner also showed steady defense.
The Blues Clues will face rival Newport Saturday to conclude their
10-game season.
Newport-Mesa All-Net team wins two
* HOOPS: The Newport-Mesa fifth grade boys All-Net basketball
team won two games last weekend to improve to 8-0.
Newport beat Capo Dana, 30-29, in Game 1.
Trevor Miles and Dillon Campbell led the scoring while strong
rebounding was provided by Parker Stone, Neil O’Hara and Fletcher
Della Grotta.
J.D. Abbott and Randall Nelson showed steady defense.
Newport handled the Laguna Flash in Game 2, 45-32.
Miles, Stone and Austin Rios led the scoring with Andrew Roth,
O’Hara and Abbott crashing the boards
Nelson and D.C. Campbell had assists.

* Newport 37, Fountain Valley 25
Newport held Fountain Valley to zero first quarter points and led
at halftime, 17-10.
Fountain Valley cut the lead to four in the final quarter but
Newport pulled away.
Allie Duernberger hit a three-pointer to spark Newport to 14
fourth-quarter points.
Ivy Melo led the team with nine points followed by Duernberger
with eight and Chelsea McCrea with seven. Ashley Kirby and Brittany
DeYan each had four points, while Taylor Holden tallied three and
Becca Turk added two.
Breakers win Silver Division title
* SOCCER: Two goals each by Lauren Terry and Josie Jogwe paced
the Newport Beach Breakers to a 5-0 victory over Yorba Linda to
clinch the girls under-10 Area Q Silver Division soccer championship.
Coach Kirk McIntosh credited his defense as the key to victory.
Sweeper Kelly Rorden, along with Monique Conant and Claire Castillo
(marking backs), denied Yorba Linda any shots on goal.
Terry scored her first goal off a deflection of a Shannon Boler
shot to give the Breakers a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Lexi
Jenkins opened the scoring in the first quarter on a penalty kick.
Jogwe scored her two goals in the third period to put the Breakers
up, 5-0.
Courtney McIntosh continued her steady play at center midfield and
Tempest Blaine provided strong skills at striker and outside
halfback. Christie Olhaver was unchallenged at goalkeeper.
The Breakers will compete this weekend in the Newport Silver
Invitational at Harper School.
Hornets swarm Jazz, 76-30
* HOOPS: Led by 24 points each by Chase Pinesett and Gus Ellis,
the Hornets improved to 9-0 with a 76-30 victory over the Jazz in
Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball Division I play.
Pinesett added eight rebounds and two assists while Ellis also
contributed three rebounds in the win.
Timothy Regan (four points, two rebounds), J.P. Gormly (six
points, four rebounds, two assists) and Kevin Rask (eight points, two
rebounds, four assists, two steals) provided offensive support.
Steady defense was displayed by Thomas Dialynas (two points, two
assists, two steals), Erik Rask (eight points, four assists) and Andy
Rovzar (one rebound, five assists, one steal).
