Anteaters post 2-1 victory at Santa Clara University
UCI third baseman Steve Guthrie laid down a game-winning bunt to
score pinch runner Gary Dudrey from third as UC Irvine defeated Santa
Clara University, 2-1, in 10 innings Friday at Buck Shaw Stadium in
Santa Clara.
Santa Clara got on the board first in the bottom of the third,
capitalizing on an error by pitcher Glenn Swanson that advanced
Bronco second baseman A.J. LaBarbera to third. LaBarbera later scored
on a Michael Thompson double-play ball.
UCI answered in the top of the fifth on second baseman Matt
Fisher’s single to center that scored shortstop B.J. Eucce, who had
stolen second base.
Anteater starter Glenn Swanson left after 6 2/3 with six
strikeouts. He gave up four hits and an unearned run.
Santa Clara threatened in the bottom of the eighth with a one-out
triple by designated hitter Scott Shapiro. However, with a runner on
first, reliever Kris Krise got first baseman Eric Newton to hit into
a double play to end the inning. The Broncos threatened again in the
bottom of the ninth with a runner on third, but Krise retired the
next three batters to push the game into extra innings.
UCI pinch hitter Andy Amara led off the 10th inning with a double
to right field off of reliever Joe Diefenderfer. Pinch runner Dudrey
advanced to third on Jon Horwitz’s sacrifice bunt before Guthrie
recorded the game-winning RBI.
In the bottom of the 10th , with a runner on second, UCI reliever
Chris Nicoll retired the next three in order to earn his first save
of the season as UC Irvine improved to 1-1. Santa Clara fell to 4-3
with the loss.
UCI right-hander Brett Smith faces Santa Clara southpaw John
Redmond in today’s 1p.m. matchup.
