Corona del Mar High girls water polo coach Aaron Chaney was all

about tournament preparation before his Sea Kings took on Cabrillo to

open the Irvine Southern California Girls Water Polo Championships at

CdM Thursday.

He held a team meeting that cut into the Sea Kings’ warm-up time,

so CdM started the game a bit rusty. Yet the Sea Kings still managed

to defeat Cabrillo, 11-4, as seniors Christine Hewko, Danielle

Carlson and Daniela DiGiacomo scored three goals each.

“I knew it was going to be a slow start for us,” Chaney said. “The

girls had only 20 minutes to warm up. I had to talk about the whole

tournament. I felt confident that we would be all right.”

CdM (16-4) scored two goals in the first period, but then broke it

open with four goals in the second. The trio of Hewko, Carlson and

DiGiacomo scored two goals each. The Sea Kings scored the four goals

in a 2:20 span.

Katya Eadington and Amy Strack added a goal each in the second

half.

Corona went up 7-0 after DiGiacomo scored in front of the net.

Cabrillo (17-3) was led by Becca Ur, who scored four goals.

In the second round the Sea Kings belted Agoura, 14-6, with

Danielle Carlson (four goals) and Vivian Liao (three goals) the

pacesetters.
